Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

No, what she is doing is only counting the money that comes in the paycheck and not the other things she receives instead of cash. Even though she does not get actual cash for those items they still have a cash value. At our last assignment if we were living off base then we would have received $600 per month for housing. Living on base we did not receive that cash we received the housing instead. So we were not living on X, we were living on X + the value of that housing ($600+)

The federal government does not consider BAH taxable income but it does consider it income.

I know that is has since changed but when EIC first came about (the mid 80's) we had to add our BAH to our taxable income to see if we qualified (our BAH put us over the top so we did not).

It also has to be included when filling out a FASFA (not sure of the actual initials) the form for governement aid for college you have to include BAH.

You don't talk about investing for retirement or college with any of your friends?

"I find it fascinating that anyone has the time and energy to know all of the intimate details about friends, family and neighbors lives."

You make time for what interests you.

Not Pumpkin, but we do not talk specifics/magnitude- just generally with friends.

You don't have to explain yourself to her.

Thank you! That is what I have been trying to point out but seem to not have been successful. It's similar to someone who has a company car or a company cell phone - while they might not be considered taxable income (I'm sure there are tons and tons of IRS code to cover it) they are still things that you are not paying for out of X dollars per month.
