Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

Doesn't one's ability to pay mortgage in the event of losing one's job also depend on what happens when one becomes unemployed? I don't know how it works in the US, but currently both dh and I would have 3 months' notice (required by law) from our companies before the last date. If our companies wanted us gone earlier, they'd have to pay up for those 3 months. In addition, dh is guaranteed one year of his full income. After that, he is covered to 80% of his income for an additional 6 months, followed by 50% of his income for another 6 months. I don't have the 1 year guarantee, but I am covered to 80% of my income for 6 months and then 50% of my income for an additional 6 months. The 80%/50% for the year is for voluntary unemployement insurance we both carry. To answer your question, we could probably manage a year or two without jobs (not that I would EVER want to be in that position!).

We do have short-term savings, but we don't really have it because of concerns about unemployment. It's our emergency fund for household repairs, car repairs etc..

Exactly. My dh has been layed off while we had a mortgage. He got unemployment and then found a job. He didn't sit around waiting for the bills to pile up. One other time he had the job before his other job ended (they were closing up the business). We have never had a lapse in pay. My dh knows what needs to be done and if he had to get 2 jobs for awhile (he's done it in the past), he will.

<<Because I do know the person who investigated it.>>

Did she give you information on this topic?

<<The person I speak with knows she is still on wic so nothing was done to stop it. >>

As you stated, you don't know all the details.

so the person that investigated it told you confidential information. Man, that's so wrong.

No, that could mean 1) theere was never anything wrong being done to stop it or 2) the situation changed.

Na, it's easier to assume that nothing was done, fits in with the "vent" better.
