Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

We just got married 10 months ago and are in the process of building our savings account. In that time, we've had to pay for our honeymoon, wedding, bat-mitzvah for my middle daughter, buy a new air conditioner for the den, etc.

In addition, my ex is behind by about $10,000 on child support -- gee, wonder where that savings account is, huh?

As far as job security, I'm a public school teacher for 17 years. Barring anything short of a serious infraction my job is as safe as they came. Dh has been at his work place for 20 years and is looking at a possible promotion -- so no leanings towards his being fired. We make about the same amount. IF either of us lost our jobs, we would be able to manage on one salary for a little while, but several of the bills would get behind quickly.

As a single parent, I was just able to barely cover the mortgage and necessities on my own.

okay, i forgot about those people. however, i'm sure there are plenty of people who move frequently who don't build up equity.

Maybe not--when we get repairs done through the dealer they give us a special rental fee on a car. It's only $35 per day.

That is the only reason I have a Kohl's card. I got a % discount when I got it and a few times a years they send me a coupon with a % discount for using it. I don't use every coupon I get but if I am planning a shopping trip anyway it is nice to save a bit.

Curiosity about people's personal finances may be normal, but I think asking them about it is a bit tacky. JMHO.

But there's a difference between an agency investigating a situation and deciding not to take action, and an agency doing nothing.

Wasn't this discussion about knowing the personal financial details of friends and neighbors?

I just don't find that "how much do you make?" comes up in conversation very often.

I don't think anyone has said they ask.
