Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

But you have the money NOW to pay off the loan to repair the car? Where did it come from? The Good Car Repair Lending Fairies? How does someone who insists there's NEVER money for savings, manage to come up with the money for paying the loan that substitutes for savings?

Well, yeah, but if you're in that kind of position does it REALLY make good fiscal sense to go out and buy a sofa on CREDIT because you're tired of slip covering the old one? Wouldn't the payments that WILL eventually come due be better served restoring the savings?

LOL! You're talking to the woman whose furniture (couch, love seat, table) came from my ex-husband's aunt for FREE. I did, however, have to pay $60 for the u-haul truck and to treat the "movers" (dh's step-sons) to dinner.

We put much of our honeymoon trip on credit cards as we didn't want to carry around too much cash. Much of it has already been paid back.

I can't see making ANY $4000 expenditure in the near future, however if we needed to replace any of our appliances ($500-$1500) yes, I would put it on a credit card.

I put away money each week for maintenance for car maintenance. My dh's car repairs went over what we had so I put it on the cc and pay it off monthly from the maintenance money set aside.

A way back I put down my entire budget. We are now able to save some money each week while paying the cc's and all our other bills.

I explained the couch over and over again. I did a NO INTEREST NO PAYMENT FOR 1 YEAR. We put the money away each week and when the bill is due, I pay it in FULL. We have done this for 14 years for things that we have needed. All our furniture when we got married, our dining room set that we needed as our family size increased, our new couch. We paid them ALL in full when the due date came. It would be the same difference if we saved the money for a year or two and THEN go and shop. We needed these things NOW so to me it is the same difference. I am paying NO interest whatsoever and I am actually making money by putting it in a 5% savings account.

That is how I bought much of my furniture when I first moved into my house after I got married.

FYI -- many car repair shops have a very limited amount of loaner cars -- so there may not be one available.
