Staying at home a choice??

The author of this article thinks most mothers go to work because they want to, not because they have to.

"Most parents from two-parent families today do have a choice when it comes to parental care. They can try and talk themselves into believing they don't, but it really boils down to priorities."

http://backofthebook.ca/living/2007/03/part-time-ophanages-part-2-job-only.html

Does anyone (other than her) really believe this? I don't know of anyone among my friends who works who wouldn't rather be staying at home with their children. But they don't have the choice!

No. You're wrong. This started when hazel was ragging on some poor fictional SAHM for not truly living on one income if said SAHM used any CCs. It's the hypocrisy in Hazel's posts that started this subthread.

My one cc is 0% and the others are not high either. Just a little more than the savings account. I feel we need to save also. I would rather take money out of a savings account if one of us loses our job to pay the bills than charge them.

<mentioned that they were going to take a nice, out of the country vacation now because they finally had $120,000 in their childrens' college savings accounts>

That is too cool and I think between close friends that is how it comes up :)

I'm sure you think the "sex offender" excuse is some kind of debate safety net, but no one was discussing the privacy of sex offenders. We were discussing that social worker friend of yours who is either blabbing away to you directly, or violating her professional ethics with her DH who then gossips with the entire neighborhood.

?????-the family I was talking about has the sex offender and the wic offender. They were 2 separate stories. No one was "blabbing". They were warning the neighbors who had young kids who is living in that house. The wic was a different situation that my friend told me about.

I am just here telling you my story. You can believe whatever you want. I guess it is hard for people to believe that other people actually DO tell the truth about things.

It is hard. Especially after Peter has already told untruths.

See, I can't imagine deciding whether my savings are ok based on what somebody else is saving. The amount we save is based on what we expect college to cost when our kids are ready, not on what our friends are saving.

The fact that you didn't reciprocate the information tells me we aren't as far apart on this subject as it might seem.
