There are other churches besides the Roman Catholic church that have masses, and I had no idea why you were putting mass in quotation marks. I have never known of any kind of grammatical or syntactical convention that implied that a church service was equivalent to a "mass."
You are right. I know something about the history, practices, and theology of the Catholic church. I know more about its ancient and medieval incarnations than I do about its modern history, and I have never been a practicing Catholic, I cannot claim insider knowledge there.
