Does working status have anything to do with supervision of children during the summer?

"That is exactly why my hours change in the summer, because our schedule changes so much in the summer."

That is great. Many wohp's don't have that option.

"What are the other choices besides leaving them alone and day/cit camp?"

At this point, I do not know as I have not researched it. Again...I take month by month and not worry about future years as I have learned, it always works out :)

"Would you wait until the youngest was 13 to do this or start when the oldest was 13?"

When my oldest is 13, the youngest will be 8 and still in camp. I would have to start with my oldest if there was nothing else available for her.

But if you worked, you'd put the kids, including the middle school aged ones, in camp (?)

The parents find someplace for the kids to be, up unitl they are old enough to have summer jobs.

" I think there's this assumption that kids in middle school can be on their own and it simply isn't true."

No one I know assumes this.

Ah, I'm much more of a planner normally, for example we ramped into staying at home just as we ramped the kids into daycare and most experiences actually. Although I'm pretty lucky since there are a number of options out there for the middle school age in my area."

I am a planner too but have learned that things always work out so not to try and figure out what I will do next year or in 5 years and take it day by day, week by week, month by month :)

"<>

I was asking if you would leave them at home together alone..."

When they are 13 and 8? Possibly. Since they are only 10 and 5 now, I don't know how they will be then and will make the decision at that time. During the summer my youngest will most likely go to camp as I don't see a reason why he would stay home when there is that option.
