actually, I've watched it and Jo absolutely has the right idea. Most of these kids are the ones that are in CONTROL of their homes -- As in a 5 year old is running the show!

You mean like trying to get a kid to go to sleep in his own bed, and that takes all night for about three nights? I think I have seen two episodes. One was a family with ten kids where the parents were relying on the older two kids to do much of the parenting and it turned out the father was a drunk. It was pretty moving, really. I saw why people like reality TV. Another was a family in Manhattan with a bad case of affluenza, and the nanny had to persuade the Mom that she didn't need seven strollers for two kids who had mostly outgrown strollers anyway, and then had to teach the two kids to sleep in their own beds. I am all for co-sleeping if that's what the family wants, but it was clear in this family that they didn't.

Oh, I wouldn't force an apology from a kid who isn't sorry; that just teaches a kid to lie. But I won't negotiate a request, either. If I tell a kid he needs to go to his room and he refuses, he will be very sorry he refused. And he will go to his room.

I did the bed thing with my child and while it took a few days, it worked. My child knew I meant business and I was not going to back down. I have taken many things from her show and have found them to be very helpful. I feel she has more experience than myself and if it works for the many families just on TV alone, it might work for my own.

What would you do to accomplish the "he will be very sorry he refused"?

It would depend on the circumstance, but neither my husband nor I tolerate that sort of disrespect. One of the kids lied to me about how well he was doing in a class at school recently and I took away all media privileges until his grade improves. He is very sorry he didn't tell me that he was getting a warning notice.

What about this one?

If I tell a kid he needs to go to his room and he refuses, he will be very sorry he refused. And he will go to his room.
