Most kids in the US are going to school by age 6, and she stated that the ppl she knew nursed till age 5 or 6, so to me that would indicate that at least some of them were. My dd was six for half of the first grade as have been most of her peers.
"Just a question, but is there any point at which you would think it wrong or harmful to nurse a child? Would you say "to each their own" about someone who still nurses a 14 year old? Where's the line, for you specifically?"
To me age just does not come into it. I don't think there is ever anything wrong or harmful about nursing a child who wants to be nursed, as long as the mother also wants it. I can't imagine any 14 year old wanting to be nursed unless they were developmentally disabled, and if that is the case then I find nothing wrong with it.
It's sort of like worrying about ppl who want to have healthy limbs amputated. It's extemely rare in the first place (and those who do want to have it done have a genuine psychological condition), and even more rare for one to find a doctor who is willing to perform the procedure. Just like it would be extremely rare for a 14 yo to still want to nurse and even more rare for a 14 yo's mother to still be willing to nurse him/her, and whose to say that in that one in a billion sitation that the parent is wrong for doing it? Frankly I don't get too worked up about what one in a billion people may be doing. Considering that no one has publicly fessed up to BFing a child over the age of 8, I'd be willing to guess that it just isn't happening (the scenrio of a 14 yo). And why worry about something that isn't happening?
"I have to agree with you on this one, it was disgusting to watch and I think BF a child at the age of 5 years old IS child abuse"
My best friend breastfed till she was five and it most definitely was NOT abusive. She has a very loving healthy relationship with her mother as do all of her siblings who BF for around the same length of time. I know all of her brothers and sisters (as well as her mom) and there are no issues there. Most people would be lucky to have a family like hers.
Sort of hard to know what your thoughts are when you answer a question with a question. Are you going to tell me how you know your child's feelings or not? I can honestly say that I know after my children nursed they were no longer hungry. Anything other than that I have no idea. How did you know what your children were feeling?

Why would I? I never said anything like that. Please tell me about this reassurance thing? What do infants need to be reassured about? I have asked repeatedly but you wont answer.
NO I am not oblivious. Yet you wont answer the question. What does an infant need to be reassured about? How exactly is it you know what an infant is feeling?
Wow, thanks for being in agreement with me, I feel that if we have to wean our bottled fed babies at the age of 1, then I believe that breastfed babies should also be weaned at the age of 1 years old as well. How many bottlefed babies do you see at the age of 5 walking around with a bottle in their mouths, I have to say i have never seen it, yet it's acceptable to breastfeed a 5 YEAR OLD? How messed up is that? I am sorry but at the age of 5 most, depending on when they are born, go to Kindergarten, imagine a parent walking into a Kindergarten class, and say, "oh excuse me I need to breastfeed my 5 year old." Doesn't sound attractive does it. So I have major issues on this, I hope I don't see someone breastfeeding their 5 year old or 8 year old. You can still bond with your child even if you don't breastfeed them. I have a great relationship with my kids, yet I didn't really breastfeed them, all were weaned from the bottle by age 2, and they were fine.
Another reason to stop breastfeeding what if these poor kids are having a slumber party or have friends over, and they to say,"oh excuse me I have to be breastfed now." UGH!

If you felt you had to wean your bottle fed babies by the age of 1, then why were your children weaned from the bottle by age 2? Fwiw, most of the people I know who bottle fed gradually weaned their kids off of the bottle by age 2 or 3 (about age 2 seemed most common). Who is saying that bottle fed babies have to be completely weaned off of the bottle by age 1?
I think you are confusing the way an infant nurses with the way a toddler or preschooler nurses. I assure you that the five year old can go the entire school day without nursing; the scenario you posit with a parent coming into the classroom to nurse the child is utterly meaningless. They can also go for the entire duration of a playdate. So you really have nothing to worry about along those lines.

"If it is not necessary to promote their growth, development, security ect then there is no reason to be nursing."
This could be said accurately for a child of ANY age.
