and if they dont outgrow it, what if they are 10 and still want to nurse, what about 15? when you leave it totally up to the child arent you taking the chance that they will never outgrow the behavior. i think part of my job as a parent is to teach my kids that things evolve. i would not let my child wear diapers in elementary school just because they didnt want to take the time to go to the bathroom, i am going to work with that child to become potty trained. if you have an 8 year old who is still nursing what would you think the reasons for that are? Jennie
Yes, I co-slept with mine until they were well past 1. With DD1 it was until she was 3, mainly b/c she didn't yet have a room until then (we didn't have space), but with DD2 she was 17 mos when she moved out of our room. She and DD1 then co-slept for a while since they both slept better with a warm body in bed than without. ;-)
True, but still, it is still appropriate for KIDS to drink from their mom's own nipples, as well as even, in some societies, from their aunt or someone else (wetnurse).
Noone is talking about putting a parent's wants above a child's needs. The baby NEEDS the diaper changed, the parent just WANTS to take a shower immediately rather than in 2 minutes. What is being discussed is putting a child's wants ABOVE a parent's wants 100% of the time.
how can you be so certain. if they are never discouraged or explained to that nursing is something that infants and small children do and it becomes a habit how can you be so sure and at what age. are you comfortable with a 6 year old nursing, how about an 8 year old, a 12 year old......at what age do you feel it is no longer appropriate for a child to be nursing? Jennie
but at what age do YOU feel it is no longer appropriate for a kid to be nursing, from anyone. i dont know, but for me a 12 year old running home from school to nurse is just weird. Jennie
