Yes, as far as being the only source of nutrition a child gets. Once they get old enough to get most of their nutrition elsewhere, that's when the disagreements begin. On another board, there's a good analogy being made about apples. We don't really need to eat an apple every day, if we are eating a well-balanced diet. But that does not discount the good nutrition that the apple brings us. Are we to not eat that apple just because it isn't necessary?

I guess that depends on how you think we use breastfeeding. I think I've mentioned a few times that my son only nurses twice a day as part of a routine. I do nurse him more when he's sick and can't hold down solids, and if he were to, say, fall off his swing and really hurt himself, I might nurse him to calm him down.
Just because something is out-of-the-norm doesn't mean it's wrong. Weaning is preferred by whom? The child? The mother? If not one of those two people, then nobody else needs to
No, but it's the same body part. Isn't that what is getting some posters so freaked out?

See, that's where your lack of experience in this area speaks volumes. There is a huge difference between breastfeeding and the sexual act involving breasts. Huge difference.

Or a grown up vs. a child? I don't buy into your comparison, but it was a good one, and one of the more honest ones I've seen in this mega-thread.

You can hate me, but do it because you know me, not because I’m a member of a group. Anyways, people aren’t grapes --- you can’t weigh them in a bunch, but I guess it’s easier than dealing with people as individuals. There, I’ve solved the riddle of prejudice: it saves time.

I think people have been real honest about why they believe it is not ncessary.

I respect your opinion as well. :-)
Your entire post can also speak to the opposing side of the debate. Just because something appears unnecessary doesn't mean it is.
See this is where I think we all have problems expressing our concern.

I just think that it gets back to "because the child wants to" and that arguement just doesn't fly with me.
