Or their blanky, or their teddy bear, or even hugging & kissing their mom. When does this come up in kids' conversations with their friends? I don't know of any child that talks about these things!

You can hate me, but do it because you know me, not because I’m a member of a group. Anyways, people aren’t grapes --- you can’t weigh them in a bunch, but I guess it’s easier than dealing with people as individuals. There, I’ve solved the riddle of prejudice: it saves time.
<<One more thing. You haven't addressed where bfing beyond the first year can be a "it's best for the family" kind of thing. How can it be best for your family to bf beyond the first yr but not another family?>>
Why, because I don't presume to know what is best for another family. How about you?

I so don't get the whole "kid will be grossed out if he learns his mother nursed him beyond one year." Among the people we know, cutting off nursing at one year is the exception, not the norm. Actually, offhand I can't think of anyone I've ever known who was nursing at six months who cut off nursing abruptly at one year. I believe the Surgeon-General still recommends two years as the "gold standard?" -- it's been awhile since I was really interested enough in the topic to keep up with current recommendations, but I believe that was the recommendation when I was a nursing Mom. I can't imagine a child associating nursing with any kind of "ick factor" -- even my teen, whose ick factor is off the scale right now, accepts nursing as a natural stage in life and doesn't get grossed out if he happens to come across a toddler and a nursing Mom. It's just no big deal for them.

Your right, no one does i did not realize you were debating her situation.
If it is not necessary to nurse children for proper growth development comfort nutrition ect, what is the reason to nurse a school age child.
