Where is nursing off-limits? When the child is over age 1? But that's the mother's choice knowing the public frowns on extended bf'ing. Clearly, there's some embarrassment involved.
Why do you think the public has an attitude against extended breastfeeders?
I have to agree with you on this one, it was disgusting to watch and I think BF a child at the age of 5 years old IS child abuse, I am sorry but I do have issues with women breastfeeding in public and I would have a serious issue seeing a 5 year old doing it. I don't believe in attachment parenting and I have seen children growing up in home schooling, and having serious social issues as well. I think attachment parenting and breastfeeding beyond age 5 is going way too far!
But on weekends and vacations, holidays, etc., you don't breastfeed in public. So you know how the public views extended bf'ing too.

How could his usual coping skills not work? That's just silly. You make it sound like the 3.5 yo is so fragile without breastfeeding away a boo-boo on the playground that he'll break! Like I already said, I too was reluctant to wean at 12 months but was pleasantly surprised at how strong and independent my children were in developing the normal coping skills all 1 yo's need and develop naturally. Those skills were increased during the Terrible 2's and 3's - and they all got through it wonderfully and normally without extended breastfeeding. They all met there milestones. It is unthinkable for me now that my children could somehow NOT invoke the usual coping techniques appropriate for their ages. The extended breastfed child can never recover those lost years.
I have a hard time believing there are people out there who can't make up their minds on a subject unless there is a Google link for them to read. OMG, what a way to live!
I wouldnt say harming...I would say they are somewhat embarassed by it. Sort of like my friend that lets her almost 4 yr old have a pacifier. She doesnt let him have it in public.

I have. But what does that have to do with BF?
<<>>
Again what does using the toilet have to do with nursing?
<<>>
Again I havent but many people do. What does this have to do with nursing?

No they arent wrong. Neither is nursing in public. So why dont we see these older children nursing in public like we see infants?

Actually throughout this whole discussion I am starting to think that you and I agree more than I originally thought.
Sure.

Exactly, glad you agree.
