1. We NEED two incomes to survive... Yeah Right! I honestly believe that out of the people that say this 90% would be just fine if they would cut their lifestyle, move to a cheaper area and sacrifice. I am not buying it one bit when people say this.

2. I put my kid in Daycare for the socialization.. Good grief, how much socialization does a 10 month old need?? Besides there are better ways to much socialize young children.

3. I am a better mom if I work outside the home.. UGHH! How in the world do you think you are a better mom by handing your kid off to Grandma or someone else to raise while you go work?? Unless you are going to beat them or verbally abuse them, I always think at home with mom is where kids thrive the most..

THere are others I can't stand, but these are my top 3. Have at it..

Wouldn't they also provide a false sense of security?

I think so. The way I look at it is there are two types of trespassers who could possibly get hurt or drown in a backyard pool. Small children who are attracted to the pool and simply want to swim, and older kids/teenagers/adults who realize they are trespassing and doing something wrong.

The little kids will be kept out by a proper fence and a good lock. If the older trespasser is willing to climb the fence or pick/break the lock, Im really not sure what a pool cover is going to do in terms of deterrence. I cant imagine that someone who was willing to go that far wouldn't simply flip the switch and open the cover.

There are some circumstances where these covers are a good idea. For example, my aunt has a pool that is inside of her screened in patio (common in her area of FL). In order to get outside to the backyard, one must pass through the patio area and thus pass by the pool. As such she has a cover. But a regular pool in a regular backyard that can be fenced and gated? Totally unnecessary imo.

It's a nice added security measure, and the ones I've seen use a key to start. But they are only possible with rectangular shaped pools, which are pretty rare anymore. Most pools around here are natural shaped (with or without the requisite rock slides and waterfalls).

Our switch is in a lock box.

We looked into getting a solid cover custom made for our oddly shaped pool with a raised hot tub and waterfall because the pool was accessable through the back doors of our home. After all proposals were in, the cover would cost more than the pool, we went low tech with a sturdy temporary fence and padlock. The key function for us was toddler safety and we found that the high tech version, though more ecstetically pleasing, offered no more safety than the low tech version; both required manual intervention, padlocking gate or hitting the switch to cover the pool. We can finally remove our toddler proof fence - the lockable privacy fence from the outside world will remain.

They have types that can be used for all shapes of pools.

I agree...

I would also think that since the covers support weight, block the sun and prevent water evaporation that water would pool on the cover as well....which of course could be an additional problem with young children.
