For the past 6 years my children have been in a school with volunteering during school hours. You could be a class parent, plan parties, go on field trips, spirit day, lunch room, recess, coaching, etc.

I bet you'll be great! But on the off chance that you don't like it, I can take that pesky teaching position off your hands as early as December. ;-)

Where I live, there are volunteers competing with each other at schools. Also, volunteers CAN be fired, especially if they are exhibiting poor behavior, for example: telling a kid he can't have something because his mom doesn't volunteer.

I used to volunteer for a political organization and it was extremely competitive amongst volunteers. There were those volunteers who got face time with politicians and other important people, and those were consigned to doing grunt work behind the scenes.

It was a commbination of trying to deal with kids who were the same chronological age but miles apart in their physical, emotional, and mental development plus the fact that about at least a third of them clearly didn't want to be there plus trying to keep the cliques from developing and taking over....there were rewards, but honestly, I'll take preschoolers anyday.
