"We don 't believe in that [WOHM]"

On Friday, as I was driving hom from work, I stumbled across an interview with the wife of the one surviving miner from the collapse in WVa. In the course of the interview, someone asked her if she worked.

Her response was that they don't believe in that. She explained that her husband was very proud of the fact that he was the sole supporter of the family, and that he didn't need her help in supporting them. She explained that they just don't believe in women working after they have kids and husbands, and that they believe her place is at home with the kids.

My heart really goes out to her, and this post isn't about her, but about the sentiment that women shouldn't work because their place is at home. And being a real man, even if it means working in dangerous conditions, long hours, holding two jobs and being a step away from poverty at every turn, means that your wife doesn't work.

I suppose this is the first time that I've heard someone, not a movie character or a character in a book, express this sentiment. I don't understand why anyone would be proud to limit their spouse's potential. Or why be proud that you live right on the poverty line?

If they didn't see the dangers of their POV before, surely that entire community, and even the whole country, has now seen the risk that we talk about on here all the time, the risk that suddenly the SAHM will need to find a way to financially support the family. I wonder if anyone will re-think what they believe in.

Right back at you! I've honestly lost count how long we've been trying--I think it's for just over 2 yrs though b/c I think we started a few mths before DS's 2nd b-day. We'll start IUI in March or April if I'm not pg by then, and DH wants to do a round of IVF if that doesn't work.

Hugs and prayers right back at you.

If I make mistakes, it can result in the loss of *millions* of dollars of research funding. One or two, on smaller grants, can be forgiven. But repeated errors, or one that was a "any-dumb-ass-knew-that-was-wrong", would probably get me fired. In fact, my predecessor was finally fired ... when a mistake on guaranteeing delivery of a proposal was the final straw in her work record.

LOL... Why do you think New Mexico's license plates have to say "USA" on them?

You wouldn't be a WOHM just because your ds goes to preschool. The tags don't have anything to do with childcare, only with work status. WOH means work outside the home, WAH, work at home. Unless you think a WOHM should be called a SAHM on weekends and evenings, since she's not AT work at those times....

I think that if someone fits the description of an abductor, that would be considered probable cause. Especially since abductions are time sensitive.

I was gonna say... if they have no stake in convicting the wrong person, that's exactly the problem! Saying that a defense attorney only cares about money and their track record and will do anything to get it, is like saying a posecuting attorney only cares about winning, whether or not the person is actually guilty. I think it happens on both sides but is not the majority by any means.

I may be completely nuts, but if I was 100% sure there was an abducted child being assaulted in a home, I wouldn't wait for a cop to show up.

And where in my post did I state I assumed you should feel the same as me?

Probably that first sentence in Post #906, where you flat out said she would.

is scary until something happens to you and than you are glad to have the police able to search a premises quickly.

I Turbotax mine.. but I can still file an EZ, my deductions have never amounted to as much as the standard deduction, and I don't have anything besides W-2s to claim. It doesn't get much easier than that.
