"We don 't believe in that [WOHM]"

On Friday, as I was driving hom from work, I stumbled across an interview with the wife of the one surviving miner from the collapse in WVa. In the course of the interview, someone asked her if she worked.

Her response was that they don't believe in that. She explained that her husband was very proud of the fact that he was the sole supporter of the family, and that he didn't need her help in supporting them. She explained that they just don't believe in women working after they have kids and husbands, and that they believe her place is at home with the kids.

My heart really goes out to her, and this post isn't about her, but about the sentiment that women shouldn't work because their place is at home. And being a real man, even if it means working in dangerous conditions, long hours, holding two jobs and being a step away from poverty at every turn, means that your wife doesn't work.

I suppose this is the first time that I've heard someone, not a movie character or a character in a book, express this sentiment. I don't understand why anyone would be proud to limit their spouse's potential. Or why be proud that you live right on the poverty line?

If they didn't see the dangers of their POV before, surely that entire community, and even the whole country, has now seen the risk that we talk about on here all the time, the risk that suddenly the SAHM will need to find a way to financially support the family. I wonder if anyone will re-think what they believe in.

Secondary infertility is the reason my kids are 7 years apart in age! If I had my way they would've been three years apart!

And MY point is that warrantless search is one of the most basic rights protected by the Constitution and that in my opinion, it's a national disgrace the people think it's okay to just pretend it's not.

Benjamin Franklin had it right, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Are you required by your state to be licensed to care for the child you care for?

Another charming feature of Bible belt day care regulations. Most states in the Bible belt don't require licensing.

it just amazes me that these are the states that are so eager to claim they value "family values"; when you look at child care ratios, licensing requirements and other aspects of their child care regulations, you can see just how little they value the children in these families.

Yeah ... I might. Except that 1) I do kinda consider child care a business and 2) Lauren clarified that she meant it like "how's the research business", which is a VERY common interpretation of things. Your interpretation of "anywhere" meaning "not inside a home" is not a commmon interpretation.

I've called many posters on saying what they mean instead of leaving us to figure it out ourselves (which we can't do because we 1) aren't mind readers 2) don't have tone of voice to help us 3) dont' have body language to help and 4) sometimes aren't speaking from the same dictionary). You can rest assured it isn't just you. I'm not *picking* on you. I apply my grammer/meaning/comprehension rules equally.

Hehe, my favorite question to the DHs of "gotta have SAHW".

If SAH is so important, how come *you're* not vying for the job?

So far, I haven't gotten a straight answer yet.
