"We don 't believe in that [WOHM]"

On Friday, as I was driving hom from work, I stumbled across an interview with the wife of the one surviving miner from the collapse in WVa. In the course of the interview, someone asked her if she worked.
Her response was that they don't believe in that. She explained that her husband was very proud of the fact that he was the sole supporter of the family, and that he didn't need her help in supporting them. She explained that they just don't believe in women working after they have kids and husbands, and that they believe her place is at home with the kids.
My heart really goes out to her, and this post isn't about her, but about the sentiment that women shouldn't work because their place is at home. And being a real man, even if it means working in dangerous conditions, long hours, holding two jobs and being a step away from poverty at every turn, means that your wife doesn't work.
I suppose this is the first time that I've heard someone, not a movie character or a character in a book, express this sentiment. I don't understand why anyone would be proud to limit their spouse's potential. Or why be proud that you live right on the poverty line?
If they didn't see the dangers of their POV before, surely that entire community, and even the whole country, has now seen the risk that we talk about on here all the time, the risk that suddenly the SAHM will need to find a way to financially support the family. I wonder if anyone will re-think what they believe in.

sigh. Silly woman. Police and prosecutors. Uniformly good, you can see their halos. They NEVER do anything even remotely wrong and if they do, well, gee gosh, they're HUMAN.
Defense attorneys. EEEEEEEEEVIL. Corrupt. Horrid. vicious, liars. They'd GIVE their baby to a child rapist, *that's* how low they are. Okay, there might be, like....4 good ones, but the rest? Satan's minions.
And how dare you suggest her opinion is biased....
standard disclaimers for the sarcastically challenged.

Is this supposed to be in support of your stance in this sub-debate? If so, you've failed miserably.
However, if it is just a venting/rant on the oddities/injustices in our system, then vent ahead.

That depends. In NC where I live...child support has nothing to do with visitation rights. They are two separate issues and are held in two separate courtrooms. What the funny thing is this. In NC if you don't pay CS EVEN WITHOUT a court order you are in hot water with the judicial system. If he gives you $1 and you take it..that is support..but he has to prove it. However...if he wanted to take you to court tomorrow for visitation even though he has never seen the baby nor paid support he can. BUT you can also have him prosecuted for not paying support.
As for the rest...I probably wouldn't go after child support. However I would have probably gotten a restraining order and if he wanted visitation I would fight it. If your goal is to keep him away...get a court order and have him give up his paternal rights...for your own safety.
I respect your opinion and applaud what you are doing.
