"We don 't believe in that [WOHM]"

On Friday, as I was driving hom from work, I stumbled across an interview with the wife of the one surviving miner from the collapse in WVa. In the course of the interview, someone asked her if she worked.

Her response was that they don't believe in that. She explained that her husband was very proud of the fact that he was the sole supporter of the family, and that he didn't need her help in supporting them. She explained that they just don't believe in women working after they have kids and husbands, and that they believe her place is at home with the kids.

My heart really goes out to her, and this post isn't about her, but about the sentiment that women shouldn't work because their place is at home. And being a real man, even if it means working in dangerous conditions, long hours, holding two jobs and being a step away from poverty at every turn, means that your wife doesn't work.

I suppose this is the first time that I've heard someone, not a movie character or a character in a book, express this sentiment. I don't understand why anyone would be proud to limit their spouse's potential. Or why be proud that you live right on the poverty line?

If they didn't see the dangers of their POV before, surely that entire community, and even the whole country, has now seen the risk that we talk about on here all the time, the risk that suddenly the SAHM will need to find a way to financially support the family. I wonder if anyone will re-think what they believe in.

Yeah I think 2nds or youngers are many times more of a handful. The older one is usally a leader & wants to be more responsible. It seems like the younger tries to find their own niche . . . like trying to get away with more, entertaining the family etc. My mil was here for a month & she kept saying about Vanessa, boy that girl is a pip (whatever that is) she is a pill, she is smart as a whip . . . the things that come out of her mouth! LOL

....I can see that and would further had that it or them being stressful is not necessarily a negative thing either.

But you don't know how good a nanny can be.

It's like when the "Germans bombed Pearl Harbor".

So, what's your position on nannies? That they do a better job than the parent or a similar job? I've had 6+ years of seeing some of the highest paid, best-qualified, ain't-she-just-one-of-the-famiy-now nannies in action, and without their bosses around. Don't be so sure you're in a position to tell Ahlmommy she's wrong or that you know more about nannies than the average Joe.

<> How can you not find that a sad statement?

<> That's great that she has absolutely no life of her own, no troubles with family relations or friends, no fights with her girlfriend and never, ever brings those issues with her to her job, never has insomnia, never touches a drop of alcohol at night with friends at a bar. How exactly did you screen for all of these qualities?

And how could you possibly know what went on during the day with your pre-verbal children when you were not there? Do you have a nannycam?

If she's so great at discipline, shouldn't that carry over into the time you're with your children? You've described on this board several issues you have with disciplining your sons.

Huh? You just defeated your own argument. You were a nanny and still didn't know how to handle an infant.

I'm certain nannies make children nap on a schedule and discipline them so that the child's day goes more smoothly.

How does one know that the nanny never wavers if the nanny is on her own for most of the day?

I've gone to work overtired. You've gone to work overtired. Most of the people I know have complex enough lives that once in awhile at least, they go to work overtired. So what's your Nanny's secret? How does she prevent ever being overtired?
