"We don 't believe in that [WOHM]"

On Friday, as I was driving hom from work, I stumbled across an interview with the wife of the one surviving miner from the collapse in WVa. In the course of the interview, someone asked her if she worked.

Her response was that they don't believe in that. She explained that her husband was very proud of the fact that he was the sole supporter of the family, and that he didn't need her help in supporting them. She explained that they just don't believe in women working after they have kids and husbands, and that they believe her place is at home with the kids.

My heart really goes out to her, and this post isn't about her, but about the sentiment that women shouldn't work because their place is at home. And being a real man, even if it means working in dangerous conditions, long hours, holding two jobs and being a step away from poverty at every turn, means that your wife doesn't work.

I suppose this is the first time that I've heard someone, not a movie character or a character in a book, express this sentiment. I don't understand why anyone would be proud to limit their spouse's potential. Or why be proud that you live right on the poverty line?

If they didn't see the dangers of their POV before, surely that entire community, and even the whole country, has now seen the risk that we talk about on here all the time, the risk that suddenly the SAHM will need to find a way to financially support the family. I wonder if anyone will re-think what they believe in.

That isn't what you asked me. You asked me in post http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-pssahwoh&msg=16497.389

***Feel free to quote any post of mine that said any such thing.***

Isn't http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-pssahwoh&msg=16497.258 yours? Isn't your name posted at the top of it? Didn't you type that?

Hear, hear! If litigation attorneys ever did a fraction of the good for society that nurses do, then they can claim superiority. I truly admire and respect your restraint. You had so many cheap shots about lawyers available in response...and yet you refrained. The lawyers on this board could learn from you (but they won't!)

For now though, I'm glad not to be part of this new elite lawyer-club.

I'm sure they'll both weep copious tears of devastation over the cruel way you have wounded them.....

I've defined it probably, literally, no less than 40 times on this board. At least once quite recently, actually.

A SAHM is a mom that is not employed.

The *only* thing the verbiage SAHM or WOHM defines is a person's work status.

Oh, my dear. And how much time each day on the internet does it take to make a good lawyer?

Are you billing for your time right now?

The day lawyers posting daily on internet message boards should feel capable of judging who should or should not practice law is a very sad day indeed. We've already established in another debate that Felicia is in no position whatsoever to hire lawyers or decide who is and who is not fit to work for her company.

Are you a partner?

Actually, my mind "hears" it my way if I hear someone saying IRL in casual conversation. If I see it written on a debate board, I tend to "hear" it your way. Weird.

yes, I wrote a post in which those words appeared, but based on the rules of English grammar, specifically punctuation, those words appeared in quotes and therefore are not reflective of MY beliefs (in response to your statement in post 379, "You would feel wrong to let someone else support you"), but only to the aforementioned operative term of "posts that say". Clearly, if we're posting in English and following the rules attendant to that language, it is NOT true that you can claim those words as "mine" in the context that I believe them and agree with them.

If you've thrown off the confines of English grammar and punctuation, please cite the rules under which you are interpreting people's posts.

Ehhh, not so weird. Because when you come here, your mind gets into a "debate" mindset subconsciously.

And how many Bar exams have you graded??

We've already established you cannot hire or fire lawyers. I don't know what gives you the notion that you know who can or cannot become a lawyer. Do over 17,000 posts on a *debate* board qualify one to be a lawyer?
