"We don 't believe in that [WOHM]"

On Friday, as I was driving hom from work, I stumbled across an interview with the wife of the one surviving miner from the collapse in WVa. In the course of the interview, someone asked her if she worked.

Her response was that they don't believe in that. She explained that her husband was very proud of the fact that he was the sole supporter of the family, and that he didn't need her help in supporting them. She explained that they just don't believe in women working after they have kids and husbands, and that they believe her place is at home with the kids.

My heart really goes out to her, and this post isn't about her, but about the sentiment that women shouldn't work because their place is at home. And being a real man, even if it means working in dangerous conditions, long hours, holding two jobs and being a step away from poverty at every turn, means that your wife doesn't work.

I suppose this is the first time that I've heard someone, not a movie character or a character in a book, express this sentiment. I don't understand why anyone would be proud to limit their spouse's potential. Or why be proud that you live right on the poverty line?

If they didn't see the dangers of their POV before, surely that entire community, and even the whole country, has now seen the risk that we talk about on here all the time, the risk that suddenly the SAHM will need to find a way to financially support the family. I wonder if anyone will re-think what they believe in.

So stop already. Or put her on ignore. That'll show her.

Aren't you required to pay self-employment taxes as well?

I watched a child over the summers a few years in a row in college, I didn't consider it a "home daycare". It's all in each person's own perspective. And yes, I live in Texas.

Having warn that helmet in two previous debates....she believes that she is a sahm because she is home with her children (although the two oldest attend school and the youngest attend prek 12 hours a week) but since she uses no childcare therefore she is a sahm and not a wahm.

So why come here and lash out at people (yes these are real people here) who have never said that kind of stuff to you? It is a debate board, yes, but why take all your baggage and shove it at us? That doesnt make for very intelligent debate style.

I guess some of us just live on a different moral plane.>>

Do you know me? You keep making assumptions about me. I was talking about the legal profession as a whole. Did I say that it was the practice I worked for?? No! Also, I stayed in it for the same reason I got into nursing - I thought that somehow I could make a difference. When I was contemplating whether or not to go to law school, I felt it was not worth it. The system is too corrupt (I am talking about my area) for me to even begin to make a change. I found nursing a more fulfilling way to amke a difference.

What is sad that you are so miserable in your life that you need to keep condemning me without ANY justification.

And the moral plane comment I won't even touch. All you need to do is read the posts where you attack me to see what moral plane you are on.

You still haven't shown me where I said that you are a lawyer.

Ummm, I posted you twice now with a direct quote. Actually, I hit the wrong button and posted the reply to myself but I put your screenname in the post.
