"We don 't believe in that [WOHM]"

On Friday, as I was driving hom from work, I stumbled across an interview with the wife of the one surviving miner from the collapse in WVa. In the course of the interview, someone asked her if she worked.

Her response was that they don't believe in that. She explained that her husband was very proud of the fact that he was the sole supporter of the family, and that he didn't need her help in supporting them. She explained that they just don't believe in women working after they have kids and husbands, and that they believe her place is at home with the kids.

My heart really goes out to her, and this post isn't about her, but about the sentiment that women shouldn't work because their place is at home. And being a real man, even if it means working in dangerous conditions, long hours, holding two jobs and being a step away from poverty at every turn, means that your wife doesn't work.

I suppose this is the first time that I've heard someone, not a movie character or a character in a book, express this sentiment. I don't understand why anyone would be proud to limit their spouse's potential. Or why be proud that you live right on the poverty line?

If they didn't see the dangers of their POV before, surely that entire community, and even the whole country, has now seen the risk that we talk about on here all the time, the risk that suddenly the SAHM will need to find a way to financially support the family. I wonder if anyone will re-think what they believe in.

Sounds to me like you're the one whining, but whatever. To each her own.

But that is still raising your child. TO say they don't is wrong. They do instill morals and values in your child. If they didn't you would have a time at home. I know I teach this little boy morals and values. That is the ticket...finding someone to care for your child that thinks the way you do.

And I explained myself over and over and over.

Thank you.

By the way, my request was a disjunctive - "if you edit your post, I won't report it."

Grammar police again today? Didn't you know that the rules of this board are not to correct grammar and typos and such? Better follow those rules since you preach them. K?

Did you not see it the last time I quoted you? As a whole, as a profession? Well, you must mean every cop is a racist.

Gee, when I read it I thought she was saying "You're too late" as in you are too late to report it because somebody else has. And I was wondering who the snitch was.

I dare you to cite the post, any post, in which I said you shouldn't correct my typos or grammar.

Funny, before I read to the end of your post I was thinking the same thing. The lady that watches my son has the same beliefs I do ,as far as "raising" children goes. I still woudn't say she raises him, though. I just don't agree with it. She teaches him, I raise him. But, that is my belief, and there are PLENTY of people who will agree AND disagree. That's just life, and that's just the nature of this topic.
