"We don 't believe in that [WOHM]"

On Friday, as I was driving hom from work, I stumbled across an interview with the wife of the one surviving miner from the collapse in WVa. In the course of the interview, someone asked her if she worked.

Her response was that they don't believe in that. She explained that her husband was very proud of the fact that he was the sole supporter of the family, and that he didn't need her help in supporting them. She explained that they just don't believe in women working after they have kids and husbands, and that they believe her place is at home with the kids.

My heart really goes out to her, and this post isn't about her, but about the sentiment that women shouldn't work because their place is at home. And being a real man, even if it means working in dangerous conditions, long hours, holding two jobs and being a step away from poverty at every turn, means that your wife doesn't work.

I suppose this is the first time that I've heard someone, not a movie character or a character in a book, express this sentiment. I don't understand why anyone would be proud to limit their spouse's potential. Or why be proud that you live right on the poverty line?

If they didn't see the dangers of their POV before, surely that entire community, and even the whole country, has now seen the risk that we talk about on here all the time, the risk that suddenly the SAHM will need to find a way to financially support the family. I wonder if anyone will re-think what they believe in.

NEWSFLASH

1. I didn't know your DH was a defense attorney...so you are WRONG.
2. Second I apologized and editted the post.
3. You have had this exchange with me at least 3 times over the years? Are you kidding me? I have only been on this board maybe a year? I have never had any sort of exchange with you. You are confusing me with someone else.

I am wondering if PNJ will threaten to report YOU if you don't edit this post?

This is getting funny.

Do you honestly not see a difference between saying that as a whole, a profession tends to be one way and saying that every single member of that profession is one way?

Do you really NOT get it?

YOu haven't, AND you read my post incorrectly. I said YOU preach the rules of the board. Not correcting typos and grammar is a rule. Got it now?

This is to the whole board: Do you people really care that much what other people think about you?

Ehh, if she only has two kids she isn't a piano teacher. She's a SAHM.

Nope, it was back when I posted udner a different name, and we did have these exact exchanges. I said "over the years" because I have been on ivillage for over five years, and I wasn't sure when exactly the other exchanges took place. It was definitely you.

If you didn't realize I'm the same person, and simply posted that because you have a deep seeded dislike of all defnse attorneys, so be it.

I'll be happy to go edit out the other post if you like.

I didn't say you owned a business. I'll use the word business since having a job means working in or for some type of "business." You are in the childcare business. Doesn't mean you own it.

You are right about infants, I can certainly agree with that.
