"We don 't believe in that [WOHM]"

On Friday, as I was driving hom from work, I stumbled across an interview with the wife of the one surviving miner from the collapse in WVa. In the course of the interview, someone asked her if she worked.

Her response was that they don't believe in that. She explained that her husband was very proud of the fact that he was the sole supporter of the family, and that he didn't need her help in supporting them. She explained that they just don't believe in women working after they have kids and husbands, and that they believe her place is at home with the kids.

My heart really goes out to her, and this post isn't about her, but about the sentiment that women shouldn't work because their place is at home. And being a real man, even if it means working in dangerous conditions, long hours, holding two jobs and being a step away from poverty at every turn, means that your wife doesn't work.

I suppose this is the first time that I've heard someone, not a movie character or a character in a book, express this sentiment. I don't understand why anyone would be proud to limit their spouse's potential. Or why be proud that you live right on the poverty line?

If they didn't see the dangers of their POV before, surely that entire community, and even the whole country, has now seen the risk that we talk about on here all the time, the risk that suddenly the SAHM will need to find a way to financially support the family. I wonder if anyone will re-think what they believe in.

" "WHy is it so important to you to work?" Because kids only stay little for a short time."

It only seems illogical to you because you don't infer what I imply from my answer above.

Yup... I'm just going to CC right now, but so far I qualify for everything. Craziness. The only bad part is that since I'm just starting, I didn't get to register until the returning students already had, and 3 of the classes I was able to take (time wise) are full. Dangit.

Isn't your logic you sah because you feel the first few years are the most important?

That's true...it was a bad example when you are talking about moral and values..but come on, when the daycare provider or teacher talks about and demonstrates kindness and respect and responsibility and perserverence, isn't that instilling values? I can't really separate "religious values" from other core values....because even though my child's school teacher may not be preaching "do unto others as you would have others do unto you" as the words of Jesus, I certainly want her living out that value in my child's classroom.

I asked why you are lashing out at me.

Much too subtle. M3T and AHLmommy were both much too quick reading their own biases into my post that they missed the nuances entirely.

Millions do; that's why they're there. Ditto for all the ridiculous fluff they print, like that silly woman who shops all the websites and reports on how easy/difficult it was. I hope she's over real soon ;-)

So you think the first 5 years are the most important as well?
