"We don 't believe in that [WOHM]"

On Friday, as I was driving hom from work, I stumbled across an interview with the wife of the one surviving miner from the collapse in WVa. In the course of the interview, someone asked her if she worked.
Her response was that they don't believe in that. She explained that her husband was very proud of the fact that he was the sole supporter of the family, and that he didn't need her help in supporting them. She explained that they just don't believe in women working after they have kids and husbands, and that they believe her place is at home with the kids.
My heart really goes out to her, and this post isn't about her, but about the sentiment that women shouldn't work because their place is at home. And being a real man, even if it means working in dangerous conditions, long hours, holding two jobs and being a step away from poverty at every turn, means that your wife doesn't work.
I suppose this is the first time that I've heard someone, not a movie character or a character in a book, express this sentiment. I don't understand why anyone would be proud to limit their spouse's potential. Or why be proud that you live right on the poverty line?
If they didn't see the dangers of their POV before, surely that entire community, and even the whole country, has now seen the risk that we talk about on here all the time, the risk that suddenly the SAHM will need to find a way to financially support the family. I wonder if anyone will re-think what they believe in.

It does here in Maryland, too. And while both Texas and NC consider them day care homes as well, they don't require licensing necessarily. But Bible belt states are among the worst in terms of day care standards, laxness in licensing and with some outrageously huge teacher child ratios, even at the infant level.
Texas, for instance permits 12 children, including the provider's kids and as long as 6 of them are before/after school, but even so.... (http://nrc.uchsc.edu/STATES/TX/tx_mini.htm#pgfId-617943)
North Carolina permits a 1:5 teacher/infant (INFANT!!) ratio or 2:10. 12-24 months is 1:6 and 2-3 is 1:10. That's insane. (http://nrc.uchsc.edu/STATES/NC/nc_9.htm#pgfId-621033 CTL-F and search for "ratios"; it's the 3rd or 4th instance down in that link)
So much for protecting the smallest members of society, eh?

Bit of advice, READ BEFORE YOU TYPE. I have stated in many posts that I know it is not avoidable in many cases, and that I was FRUSTRATED and annoyed with previous posters. I'm sure we all say things when don't mean to say when we are frustrated and annoyed.
Honestly just a question now, if you are infertile, how do have children? Are they adopted? I was under the impression that infertile women could not ever have children, not just have problems TTC. Am I wrong?

That doesn't worry you one bit?

:::shrug::: I don't need to ask you what you mean; you stated it clearly. You don't think lying is disrespectful.
I think it is. I think it's FAR more disrespectful than back talk (not that I'm a big fan of back talk, but at least *actual* communication is occuring during back talk. Lying is the opposite of communication and without communication there can be no respect.)
I think you have an odd definition of respect; I don't know anyone other than you that thinks lying can occur while the liar remains respectful.

It's called "federalism."
