let me preface by saying i admire the self sufficient individual, the one who was raised to think for himself, make decisions for himself, pick himself up after a fall and move on kind of thing.

I don't think your nephew/nieces are in a classic authoritarian household . . . I think they are in an extreme authoritarian household. I know you mention extreme in your post after that, but classic should not describe that household! LOL

I should probably have said "textbook" rather than "classic." Authoritarian parenting has become a clinical term and that was how finally.me used it. In that sense, the household of BIL/SIL is quite a good illustration of authoritarian parenting and what it brings.

Also, Ducky pointed out that "strict" is not necessarily the same as "authoritarian" and she is right.

I think you are talking about a bunch of different things.

I was not a rebel. My mother was never around. I was either cared for by someone else or after age of 8 I was a latch key kid. I never had anyone around, but I never got into trouble. I just wasn't that type of kid. I also grew up in areas that I saw things and people I knew I never wanted to become. I had complete freedom, but I didn't abuse it. For the most part I didn't want to be like my parents. Also with the fact of my mom not being around often or even when she was not paying much attention to me caused issues for me.

How is it "ambitious" to want a good family life?
