What about eating issues?

We have debated sleeping issues to death once again....so what about another one of the issues of childhood....eating and/or not eating?

My kids eat just about anything and have a pretty well rounded diet.

Hollie, in this thread at least, I'm not arguing with you. You and I have both had lots of people over for dinner, including vegetarians. You and I seem to come up with exactly the same solutions.

For one of my kids' christenings or early bday parties, for example, I made two lasagnas: one with meat and one without. I was going to make two lasagnas anyway, because we had lots of people over. So keeping the meat out of one was no big deal, even though I was also serving green salad and garlic bread and probably even a honeybaked ham. I didn't actually know if anyone attending the party was a vegetarian. But it seemed like a pretty good bet that there was at least one non-red-meat-eater in the bunch. I don't advocate depriving any of the "regular" eaters, just of providing more than salad to one's vegetarian guests.

Congratulations! I'm so happy to hear it. I just heard the good news and popped back over, just in case you were still checking in.

And I don't think PNJ indicated she'd serve all dishes with meat in them. I guess I didn't see anything in her posts that warranted the thrashing she received. Except for posters' pre-conceived notions about her rigidity and inflexibility. She didn't originally say much different that I did. Shoot, she was even told that she needed to serve vegetarian main dishes to expand her horizons. Why? If her guests have "enough sustenance for them to be satisfied"?

Again, you will find most people did notice her mention "active" and "balance" in terms of both activity and diet.

From what I recall of the book that covered this research, they do process sensory input and problems in different (one could argue more methodical, slower) ways.

Flexibility may take time for these people. . .just like some have natural muscular-skeletal flexibility and others must 'work up' to that same level of flexibility.

So you agree with me that you would take care of your mom who has an allergy, either by making one acceptable meal for everyone or by making something special for her. Me, too.

As to allergies and food preferences, here's the thing. If I invite someone over to a small gathering, and I know they have quirky food needs or preferences, I'm not going to question whether they're just being faddish or truly have a legitimate excuse, so to speak. None of my business. I will try, within reason, to accommodate them regardless. If I don't succeed, however, I don't really want to be confronted with the fact.

But if it's going to be a lot of people, not so much. Unless it's a family member or someone else close who really needs things a certain way. That's where multiple dishes come in handy.

See, what I got from your post that it would be a benefit to everyone. Even those who didn't realize it. So essentially, I agree with you. If it works for you, that's what it's about.

My friend gave me the Babywise book to read. She really wanted to have everyone around her see everything we were missing. I was never so appalled in my life. I want to eat when *I'm* hungry....why wouldn't I feed my baby when *he's* hungry.

Isn't your nanny upset on Monday morning when she's got to work hard to get them back on their schedule? One of the first compliments my nanny ever paid me was marvelling at how easy it was to "take back the reins" from us on Monday morning.

She did indicate, however, that she would not prepare any dishes with her brother in mind. I dont understand inviting someone into your home and then not making sure there is food for them to eat. Like I said, making an extra side that is vegan or vegetarian doesnt really take extra work. Just some extra *thought*.
