I've always told my kids that they need to get enough education and training to be able to support themselves - with our without a spouse, with or without kids. It really should be the responsibility of each and every able-bodied, able-minded adult to financially support themselves.

If one agrees with a spouse/partner later on that financial support will be done by one spouse only, okay ... but be prepared to do it yourself. Always.

I used to say "look at how a man treats his mother and you'll see how he'll treat his wife." -- granted, my xh was a cheat .... and he treated his mother well, but i still think there's some truth in that.

And ITA with your last sentence. Spouses need to remember to be friends and lovers - always. This is in addition to being good roommates, good sons/daughters, good employees, good parents, etc. Friends and lovers often gets forgotten.
