I do get asked all the time. Even when I went to my son's class last week the kids wanted to know what I did at work-lol!!
I really don't find it odd and I never thought it was rude because you could "figure out" how much someone would make. You can't really know just by telling someone what you do how much you make.

i have a sister who stays home, her husband has had the same, modest job for as long as they've been married.
honestly, the questions are great learning opportunities as well.
i find the money factor/how much you make question rude.
