I heard this interview on the radio with (I think) Madonna and the interviewer asked her what she would want her kids to say/to think about her and she replied, "She's my mom and I love her." I don't know.... I think many people "love" their moms because you love your family, but it doesn't mean they "like" their moms. I think I would want my dd to love *and like* me.

Not while they're growing up.

I don't care if my kids like me. I am not their friend, I am their mother. I hope they like me when they are adults, but them liking me is not essential to me.

I agree that the "like" thing is for when they are "grown-ups."

Well, I was thinking about what I'd like to say about MY mother, and really, what I want my kids to say are the things I say about my Mom now. She didn't have all the answers, and she made mistakes, sure, but her love for us and is was overflowing and unconditional, and that I remember more than any specific mistakes. She did everything she could to give us wonderful childhoods, to instill character and responsibility into us, to teach us the difference between right and wrong, she believed we could accomplish just about anything we set out to do, and she had (and has) a wonderful sense of humor and compassion to boot. I couldn't ask for more than that from my boys.

I disagree. I'm going to do what I consider the right thing for them regardless of whether it curries favor, but I'd much rather they like me than not. That's different than being their friend.

Ya know, I think that's why I like you! A lot of parents are so worried about being their child's best friend that they forget to be a parent! I feel the same way.
