What have you "given up" in order to have and parent children?

I personally have only known one woman who breastfeed past a couple of months.

Which is interesting from the perspective of understanding your social circle, but does not change the fact that in other circles it is common to breastfeed much longer than that.

That is too bad for all the other children you know, since the benefits of breastfeeding stretch on long past a couple of months.

I understand that. I also think many people do it as a way to save money.

Back when the girls were eating pureed foods, commercial baby food had a lot of additives to them; mainly salt and sugar. So I started making my own for that reason. But then I discovered that it really wasn't hard or less convenient that buying jarred foods and it was cheaper. If we were to be out of the house for the day, I just took the food from the freezer. By the time it came to feed them, it was ready to eat. When Dylan came along, I did buy the occasional jar simply for the convience but I hated to pay the price. And I would never buy jarred bananas or applesauce.

I bought it all the way up to eating table food with my dd and probably after but with my ds I barely bought them as I had him eating earlier and starting whole milk at 10 months old.

It was philosophical for me, as was not using jarred baby food. As is not serving much that comes out of a jar, can, or box now.

It is probably wise. But it does call into question, and not for the first time, the odd demographics of the people you know. According to the latest study by the National Institutes of Health, 17.2 percent of babies were still being breastfed at 12 months in 2002-2003. It's got to be statistically significant that among your acquaintances, it must be something like less than one percent of the people you know breastfed even half that long!
