What have you "given up" in order to have and parent children?

Ah! So among the people you know, financial concerns are an important part of choosing to breast feed. Fair enough, it wasn't clear that was what you meant.

What is it you don't want to debate, btw?

I don't think anyone was suggesting that women should be forced to breast feed.

Well, again, another indication that the people you know are rather unusual as compared to the larger society.

Most people DO debate BECAUSE they have their own beliefs and opinions. Otherwise, what are you debating?

Next time you go, look at the regular unsweetened (not the splenda-sweetened kind) applesauce.

Because breastfeeding is better for both mother and child, and because in a third world situation, there is no reason to bring in formula unless for medical reasons. Women in the third world, like women most everywhere, want what is best for their babies. Many of them are being persuaded that because rich American women use formula, it must be a really good thing to do. It is not.

I think there is still a similar stigma against breastfeeding in lower socioeconomic classes in the US, too.

Yes, you are right. My SIL used to be in the state public health department here in the Maternal Child health part, and there are a lot of lingering cultural ideas and misinformation about breastfeeding that she had to deal with among various subgroups.

Yes, and I just realized that it may be because using formula is a way to show that you can afford to feed your kids, i.e. there is status in formula.
