My son's baseball games have been known to run that late or past 10pm and I like going to their games and we often stay afterwards for a chat with the parents while the kids have icecream and run around the diamond, despite just having played a game, lol.
So taking a nap every once in awhile would mean that you missed one of these things? I guess I'm coming at this from older children since I'm not doing things with my kids constantly, they are doing things with their friends and the neighborhood kids.
I can not take short naps and when I have in the past, they last for hours and I feel horrible afterward so to me it is not worth it to lose my weekend. My kids are not out with the neighborhood kids as I have stated before my dd's friends do not live near us.

You do these during the day on the weekend? But if you did that, wouldn't you miss the above with your kids? I don't see taking a nap much different than a pedicure or getting my hair done, it's still something for me. If you don't have a problem being away from your children for those things, why is a nap different to you?
Naping is a couple of hours deal for me and I don't feel energized and I would rather do something then waste my time sleeping when I can do that at night. I spend time on the weekends both with and without my kids.
So what would it matter if you took a nap during the time they are doing their own thing? You wouldn't be missing anything if they are doing their own thing as well as you doing your own thing. I think it's kinda interesting to keep mentioning eating later at night....
As I mentioned before, I don't take quick naps and I don't feel energized to do things after it so I don't find it worth it. I do both things with and without the kids on the weekend so I am still doing something that needs to be done or spending the time with the kids playing games, etc.

When I'm out of town, my dh either shops and cooks for the kids or takes them out to eat (usually a combination).

Not if they weren't falling asleep when they went to bed, no.
