The post I made here recently "is 30 minutes a day with your kids enough" and the Dr. Laura post make me wonder--what is a healthy balance?

I believe so, but it's just so much fun to say it. :-)

That's kind of how I do it...work my 40 hours and get out. And my new boss has made comments about others doing that.

I don't know what he expects exactly...I don't intend to work more than 40 hrs. Until recently, I was a 30-hr employee. You can go ahead and expect 45+ from my 25-year old coworkers, but I have a kid. And I am absolutely fine with my coworkers getting bigger raises and bonuses if they get more accomplished than I do. I've been there, done that.

I'll fess up - I listen to her on my commute to pick up my son from daycare.

She does really have a lot of good things to say. I really hated her until I started listening.

But still, she's far too black-and-white. It cracks me up that she'll rip a young mother a new one for daring to work 4 hours a week - FOUR! - outside the home, leaving her children's care to someone else (grandma). I spend more than 4 hours a week at the gym.

Personally, I think the healthy balance is hard to quantify but easy to recognize. Raised by two working parents, I often felt that the reason it worked was that I fell asleep every night feeling loved and secure in my environment.

As I got older, I could identify that it came down to knowing that my sibling and I came first, but were not the only priority, and I knew that I had food, shelter, medical care, clothes, and the means to succeed in school.

As a parent, I have the same little checklist in my head. I want my kids to feel loved, comforted, and secure. If they do, then I feel I have found the right balance. I feel my kids have been a great barometer of something not quite right--even when the not quite right is related to financial stress or relationship stress between the parents. There have been times when a sense of not quite right led me to take a vacation day to spend with a child, or arrange for a babysitter so dh and I could go out, or adjust our work schedules. And we find the balance again.
