What kind of errands....

Do you run on a daily basis? Weekly basis? Monthly basis?

I've often heard people say that they need a lot of time during the week to run errands and that those errands would otherwise take up their evenings and weekends if they had to WOH ft. It made me curious because I just don't seem to have many errands to run at all. Are we just lazy :-)?

It is history, to a certain extent. Felicia's kids, up until recently anyway, have been on a pretty strict schedule with an early bedtime. They haven't had a lot of the experiences that lots of us consider "normal" or "desirable" for young kids. For instance, they haven't yet been allowed to stay up on the Fourth of July and see fireworks. That's her choice, again, but to say that "my kids have no interest in "X" when they haven't been exposed to "X" or allowed or encouraged to try "X" bugs some people.

"et's just say she has deliberately avoided involving them in sports, I don't see why that's important enough to discuss." So don't discuss it then. We do see why it's important enough to discuss. And it isn't because sports is so important. It's because clarity is so important.

Well, I dont think that one needs to be involved in physical activity *24/7* but I think its very very important to get kids on a regular schedule of being active at an early age, so that they grow up used to DAILY activity and find enjoyment in it.

Considering our country has an obesity rate of over 67% now, inactive families are certainly something to be concerned about. And I do believe Felicia has struggled with her weight and her dh is overweight-that alone should be reason to make sure her kids stay active. I dont necessarily think that means organized sports, but sports certainly help.

Do you mean PNJ ought to show more clarity in stating why her kids aren't as sporty as they could be?

I guess I just don't see why it should be assumed that Felicia hasn't encouraged, allowed or exposed. And, again, even if she hasn't, IMO it makes no difference. What lots of us consider "normal" or "desirable" - that's the bias I'm referring to here. IMO, while many parents like to emphasize sports and organized activities for young kids, many others don't, and that could also be considered normal.

Dogma thinks I'm reaching to claim this, but IMO it's just as much reaching to fault PNJ in this way. IMO, others may not see my point because of their pro-sports-and-organized-activities bias which is so ingrained as to be taken for granted. I think that's worth examining. I'd start a thread about it, but I think maybe it's been overdone.

Of course you make a great point about the importance of activity, and lots of it. But I'd rather assume her kids are as active as any other young kids, regardless of how involved in organized sports they are or aren't. IMO, there's a bias at work in the minds of parents today that's reflected in this thread. I think parents should be "presumed innocent" wrt encouraging their kids' physical activity, and not "presumed guilty" unless they can show their kids are signed up for 2 or 3 official activities by age 5 or 6.

No. She ought to have the clarity of realizing why she's doing what she's doing.

Here's an example of what I mean by bias: "...to do something that's enjoyable..." To some of us, an activity may not be enjoyable if it can't be done in the way one is used to doing it. It may not even be enjoyable at all.

You know, I've heard people say that too and i don't have a ton of running either!! However, my sister in law with 3 kids and 2 are in school seems like they are always running somebody somewhere!! So maybe it depends on how many kids you have and what all they are in?

For you to assume she doesn't understand herself isn't "reaching"? Maybe I'm too much of a newbie to get that.
