What would you give up to stay home?

Hi everyone.

I have always said that staying home is so important to me that I would give up many things to be able to do that. We live in a very small home, I have no jewelry and we buy all our clothes at Walmart. I know that if I went back to work, we could afford more. But I would never trade being at home for a larger house or more luxuries.

However, after reading this board I have started to suspect that there are things I would not want to give up. If I couldn't send my kids to preschool a couple of hours a day, if I couldn't afford any after school activities like ballet lessons or if I could'nt afford any kind of summer program for them, I think I would have to find a way to go back to work. So basically, I'm perfectly happy to deny myself "things." But I would not want to take much away from the kids.

Of course I would probably have to find a new career becuase I could never work the 80 hours a week my old career entailed.

You said in another post that no mom would choose to work if their child wanted them to SAH. Now you're saying that you wouldn't give up WOH if your child said they'd be happier if you were home.

So, which is it?

My children do now and have always preferred me to their father or any other caregiver.

I'm sorry, I must have been unclear.

Hey, I wasn't the one who said it, i just agreed and thought it was funny.

And it's not *her* financial power. Although I suppose shes made some money from those rediculous tv shows. And for the record, Ive gone out of my way to avoid having to see her in any tv show whatsoever. I dont need to watch a dumb, promiscuous (other word may be to harsh) self-involved, selfish brat on tv. I hate reality shows.

Theres a difference between self-assure and self-involved.

Using people you know as an example of *most sahms* also brings nothing to the debate however. You live in one teeny little corner of the world, and saying *well I know sahms that do this or that* is purely anecdotal and certainly does not provide any kind of accurate portrayal of sahms at large. So you cant say *most sahms* dont plan beyond the sahm years, because you probably dont even know 1% of the sahms out there-you base your very biased and narrow views on a very small personal experience. Not worth debating.

Maybe that's true with lawyers. I have to say that the couples who are both scientists and very competitive with each other tend not to do well as a couple in the long run. The most successful couples I've seen (where both are scientists) tend to work in a highly cooperative fashion, either as an official team or at the very least relying heavily on each other for support and feedback.

Maybe scientists are just more cooperative and less competitive (and have more reasonable egos

Marie and Pierre Curie set the tone for that >100 years ago. Yea for them! A wonderful first example of a married couple collaberating on scientific research.

LOL, I've seen some massive egos and serious competition in science, but one has to at least *pretend* to be cooperative because one can't effectively work alone.
