What would YOU have to do to SAH?

If you're a WOH/WAH mom, what sort of "downsizing" would you need to do in order to afford to be a SAHM? (SAHM defined here as not earning any money)

For me, I would have to put all our non-essential possessions in storage and move in with my parents.

I personally don't think that lack of funding is the problem.

Fair enough. I am not sure it is the right number either. If you look up your district in google and search for per-pupil spending you should get the right number. 3.5K per sounds impossible. That is typical tuition in the cheapest kind of Catholic school, and that only works because those schools are subsidized by the church.

I already said that I completely understand that this is the reality where you live. It seemed to me, judging from your exchange with Laura, that you were projecting beyond your own area, that is all.

"Possibly" does not mean "all," we agree.

You, and I think others, argued several times that by helping your (non-ESL, non-immigrant, non-disadvantaged) kids you freed the teacher to help the ESL/disadvantaged/poor kids. This would imply that those kids are not getting much help at home, the way your kids are. So this was put forth as the reason why it is a good thing to help your kids with home work. At the same time, it was argued that promoting heavy parental involvement and making it a feature of the school was to encourage the disadvantaged/ESL etc parents to help their kids, which was supposed to convey some kind of benefit. Yet, it has been pointed out several times that the barriers to their helping are great, that the reality is that they tend not to be very involved in their children's home work and that the real benefit of parental help is that the advantaged parents help their own kids to give the teacher more time for the disadvantaged kids. It just came across as a confusing argument.

i don't necessarily agree.

i think what makes a good school good is the very parental involvement that lacks in other schools.

Um, didn't say that she didn't know the area that she lives in, so I can't really answer your question.

I don't think it is the same as the district per-pupil spending number, but it is absolutely the number that our school (and all schools in our district) gets per pupil. As I said, I'm on the school collaborative committee that approves the budget. For next year, we're getting budget relief of about 60K, which allows us to keep our PE teacher (who will be cut to halftime) and hire a tech for the library. We lost our librarian, half of the PE teacher, one of the two school secretaries, and most of our para time. It really sucks. We have art and music (halftime) only because of a school bond issue. We will, however, have better class sizes next year than we had this year.

Why would I need to do that, I'm well aware of the advantages for kids who have parents who are educated and affluent?

The curriculum is what the teachers are required to cover. Science fair is not part of the curriculum, so the school doesn't have to do it. It's more in the nature of academic enrichment. Teachers don't have time to help 30 kids do science fair projects *and* teach the required curriculum, so that's why it's a homework project. I can't explain it any more clearly than this.

I'm pretty sure that is something I also, never said.
