unfortunately, i agree with you, but school districts do not. Most have completely gotten away from rote memorization of basic math facts. I guess they just expect that the kids will "absorb" them and learn them that way. However, as with my dd and sd, both needed intense repetition in order to learn them.
whether you like it or not, this is the way that math education has gone. There is no time built into the current curriculum for what we term "drill and kill" (i.e. flashcards). Therefore, parents MUST work with their children to make sure that they learn these most basic skills.
Our district drills math facts. In third grade, they use a program called Math Masters. Basically a progressive set of timed tests of addition, subtraction, addition and subtraction together, multiplication, division, and then multiplication and division together.
I understand and thank you for explaining. However, this supports my initial argument, I think. Again, math facts are essential, therefore this should be part of the basics that schools will impart to the young, whether or not the rents choose to get involved. As several of us have argued, we do not think that it is prudent to leave the teaching of fundamental building blocks up to the discretion, dedication, time and ability of the parents.
Also, as a parent, if I had to drill math facts, spelling and grammar on a regular basis, then I would question seriously what on earth my kid was doing in school for 6 hours a day. Although I am actually very involved in my kid's education, I do not want to be doing these things. The whole point of school, IMO, is that school provides the basic stuff in a reliable and orderly way, leaving me free to provide the extras, the fun stuff and the tangents.
Everyone I see bagging groceries and stocking shelves in our union grocery stores are mostly the elderly and teen age kids...but you are saying that someone can make a living on a bagging groceries salary?
Who on earth are you talking about when you say "you people"?
