What would YOU have to do to SAH?

If you're a WOH/WAH mom, what sort of "downsizing" would you need to do in order to afford to be a SAHM? (SAHM defined here as not earning any money)

For me, I would have to put all our non-essential possessions in storage and move in with my parents.

No, not necessarily.

I'm highly dubious of that.

I'm quite pessimistic that increasing the quality of education in the schools is going to do the trick, for lower than middle class children.

She said he still made honor roll, and I inferred from that, that the poor homework grades didn't have an overall detrimental effect on his academic record.

Community college? Surely you can get into one of those with a C average. From there you can move to a 4-year.

I agree that you can not make all disadvantage disappear magically by improving schools. However, a lot really can be done. The first step, IMO, is to make sure that every child will be taught fundamental, necessary skills and information in elementary school, by the teacher, not his parent.

Open enrollment would probably also be somewhat helpful, but that is the sort of measure that sends the middle class to the barricades.

My oldest was like that and it took me awhile to figure it out. I couldn't figure out how he would miss them for me but would get an A on the test. DUH on me!

>not here in our area of CT where the CHEAPEST of rents are upwards of $600 -- often NOT including utilities. Then there's food and the car insurance that will cost US at a minimum of $150 per month once we add him to our policy....

I don't doubt that people "could" live on that -- I just doubt that they're even barely subsisting around HERE in our area (and no, we're in a very middle-middle class area.>

I don't doubt that. People who make that income don't live in very nice neighborhoods period. People who make that money also will have cheaper car insurance because their car will be a lot older, $150 is if you have a newer car.

In Richmond, Va it was possible and still is. Many people have to live off that much an hour and make. I know for some people it is inconceivable, but it is true.

I would hope that it would not be anyone's goal to live on 8.50 an hour for their entire lives. I think that's her point. In some areas, like where Iamfinenow lives, it would not even be possible to live on that.>

I would hope not also. It is a very tough life to live on that. I don't doubt in her area it would be impossible. I am just saying that it is possible to live on that and people do. People also support families on that income.

ETA: I thought about this after...people who make minimum wage may have a goal to make $8.50 an hour. It is definitely a big step up from min wage...which some people live off of too.
