What is the magic of middle class when it comes to learning basic skills? Flash cards and the desire to help their kids learn their math facts. You don't need to make parents middle class to help them use flash cards--you just need to get them more involved in their kids' education.
PS I also applied to exactly one college -- wrote only one application and was accepted early decision. I knew by December of my senior year in high school where I would be going.
I didn't say it didn't affect his grade, in face quite the opposite based on my exchange with i_am_fine_now, an F in homework is a very small part of the overall grade, as explained by that poster.
I don't know, but I doubt there are enough people in my district who feel strongly enough about everyday math to get it changed. My kids' school addresses this problem by using a computer program to teach math facts.

IMO, I think to spend the kind of money your college charges for 4 years, you'd need better reasons than those.
