I find that odd. They care enough to use flashcards with their kids to make up for the inadequacy of the curriculum, but not enough to try to get the curriculum changed?
Middle class kids have other advantages, but when you're talking about learning the basics, parental involvement is a huge part of it. It's not as simple as saying that you should just change the curriculum.
h respect for my folks - people would say "what is Katie doing" and my dad would say "she's going on the stage" they would often get "and you ALLOW that?" and my father would say "what's to allow? she's an adult it's her decision and besides she's a hell of an actress"
