What would YOU have to do to SAH?

If you're a WOH/WAH mom, what sort of "downsizing" would you need to do in order to afford to be a SAHM? (SAHM defined here as not earning any money)

For me, I would have to put all our non-essential possessions in storage and move in with my parents.

I'm sure it's because the need to be able to pay for my kids' college educations has directly shaped my work/life choices.

I guess if people are satisfied with a situation which forces them to teach their kids math at home, then all is well. I would be annoyed, however.

Dh and I are fairly involved politically.

Your top paragraph is exactly what I'm referring to.

There's a lot of that quality difference that is perceived, as opposed to real.

Others have explained it better than I can. This lady does a pretty good job: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr1qee-bTZI

Put more simply, any curriculum which has the side effect of making it necessary for someone like you to drill math facts with your kids is inadequate. Most schools have started supplementing and tweaking EM, which is another good indication that the curriculum as is does not work well.

I find Katie's reasons just as compelling - hers were attraction to the community, religious affiliation, and affordability that had the liberal arts program that she wished to pursue. Shaking my head, Worcester... when there was a perfectly acceptable Jesuit university down the pike. ;-)

I can never see my oldest ds doing well in a large state university, strength of program and affordability may have to take a back seat to school size and location.

<<Do you really think that schools would be better if the resource of parents is excluded from the equation?

Didn't my second paragraph say exactly that?

I was aiming to avoid the EM discussion, but I have to jump in.

I think your last statement is only true if schools use *only* the EM curriculum.

And you're basing that opinion on what? Certainly not your own experience in the working world.
