What would YOU have to do to SAH?

If you're a WOH/WAH mom, what sort of "downsizing" would you need to do in order to afford to be a SAHM? (SAHM defined here as not earning any money)

For me, I would have to put all our non-essential possessions in storage and move in with my parents.

While it is true that two generations ago the WOH/SAH household was more common I do not think that most men were working two jobs to make that possible.

and yet, back then -- the women were involved in much more HOMECARE tasks -- cooking, laundry, cleaning -- than spending time with their children. And back then, children as young as 5 and 6 were helping do those chores -- not having the hours and hours of free play time that they have now.

and BTW, I love my sensitive, house-keeping husband -- who works ALONGSIDE me. But I'm quite FAR from "hard-edged" and was only the breadwinner when I was a single mom.

that's true -- BUT to tout SAH as "the" way to go because it was done years ago (and for only a very brief time in recent history!) is a misnomer. The SAH done back then was time spent ON THE HOUSE -- NOT playing with the kids. Modern conveniences have worked to change this dynamic around.

However, time studies actually show that TODAY's current sahm and it's wohm counterpart spend an ALMOST equal amount of time with their children (there's something like a 21 min. difference per day) on average.

There are a lot of women whose whole identity is wrapped up in being a mother.

Yeah, I think the old setup stunk for a lot of people.
