Which came first, the title or the SAHW?

Last night I attended my husband's work Christmas party. I sat with the CEO, CFO, CTO, COO (Chief operations officer, I didn't know that acronym, I had to ask), Creative Director, Marketing Director and their wives. Near the end of the evening it was just we wives chatting mostly about kids. I made the observation that even though all the wives were intelligent, educated and accomplished women, not a single one (except me), woh. They are all SAHM's.

Any thoughts on why that might be? I have my own opinion but I'd like to hear from everyone else first. Do you think they sah because of their husbands jobs or their husbands have their jobs because the wives stay home? Or doesn't it matter?

But you have already admitted that your DH's situation is not the norm.

That's truly wonderful for your family.

What's so great about Katie Couric's job or Kelly Ripa's?

Yes, I did. And I've actually forgotten the point of this part of the thread. I'm not sure there was one; I think somebody just mentioned they planned to retire at 55.

Sounds like a good financial goal to me.

I don't want to give the impression that we have trust fund or anything. We both came from working class families. However, we both were in the right place at the right time with stock options (although we did have to earn those options, so it wasn't totally luck). The last year I worked was a really, really good year that set our financial future. Compound interest is a wonderful thing, so getting a big hit early on made a big difference.

I'm a SAHM and most of the executive's wives at my husband's office are SAHMs as well. I believe that by taking care of the home, all the bills, the baby and incidentals (making dinner, lunch, dropping off dry cleaning, etc.) I make it possible for my husband to concentrate on his job and climb the corporate ladder. In the same vein, my husband WANTS me to stay home so he works hard to earn the income needed for me to retain my SAH status.

We won't be able to make it by age 55.
