opinion to DIFFER. What I mean is--is there anyone on this board or in real life whose opinion/reasoning/debating/facts started to make your thinking more to the middle? As in if you thought sah or woh was best & then after some discussion/thought, you began to think that whatever is best for each family--really there is no one best way, etc.

We just really needed a new thread here!!!!!!!!

So your doc has told you that the rise in adult onset diabetes in children has nothing to do with weight?

"As my edocrinologist has explained, you can't "head off" Type II Diabetes. it isn't caused by obesity; obesity is simply a common vehicle by which Type II Diabetes makes itself known. Type II is genetic;

"Type II diabetes generally occurs because of a metabolic failure at the cellular level, a condition spurred by poor diet, obesity, environmental factors, and genetics. Body tissues, such as cell receptor sites, lose their sensitivity. As insulin attempts to deliver glucose into the cell, the "key no longer fits the lock." Blood glucose, barricaded from the cell, accumulates in the bloodstream. Unlike Type I diabetes, insulin therapy is usually not indicated in Type II diabetes because typically these individuals already have too much insulin in their bloodstream. However, after an extended period of excess insulin secretion, the pancreas may lose its ability to produce insulin and a Type II diabetic may then become insulin dependent.

In Type II diabetes, the onset is usually after 40 years of age, but the onset can occur at any age. In fact, the incidence of Type II diabetes among 30-year-olds has gone up over 70% in the last decade. Physicians are increasingly reporting the diagnosis of Type II diabetes in teenagers, as well. The number of teenagers (an age group not normally targeted) being diagnosed with Type II diabetes indicates that a diet structured around high glycemic carbohydrates causes chronic states of hyperinsulinemia. A poorly selected diet, along with a lack of exercise, increases the risk of diabetes and premature cardiovascular disease."

I never have to go at night unless I've been drinking, so that's always a dilemma for me--do I have a beer with dinner and end up having to get up in the middle of the night, or do I forgo my desire for a beer so I don't have to leave the tent. Fortunately for us, our kids never have to pee at night, but I imagine taking little kids to the bathroom in the middle of the night is a million times worse. We're taking our girl scout troop (12 kids) on a 2-night tent camping trip in June, and I'm not expecting to get a whole lot of sleep.

ALL children who get diabetes young would have gotten it anyways so why bother trying?

I never said that. I said if your aim is to reduce the simple carbs your daughter gets in the evening, giving her something with 2 to 3 times the amount of carbs that the thing you're avoiding isn't the way to go about it. An apple has MORE simple carbs than bread. Period. Add peanut butter which *also* has carbs and you haven't aided your cause one bit.

Talk to me later when you're calm and rational enough to discuss this factually and without all the hysterics. BTW, thanks for the link that confirms everything I've said.

I'll be happy to discuss the ability to "prevent" Diabetes in someone when you've adequately explained how rejecting a food with a range of 15-20 grams of carbs (bread) for one with a range of 18-30+ grams of carbs (apple by weight), augmented by a food with an additional 5-10 grams of carbs (peanut butter) meets the goal of limiting carbs.

I meant that I think camping can be nicer than a motel 6. At least the way we camp. We do not camp in the middle of nowhere. I have friends who go up to Colorado every year with their 2 very small kids. They hike for a couple of hourse and camp in the middle of the woods. That scares me to death. I need the amenities of the places we stay at. I need a pool, snack bar, bumper boats, fishing, etc.

That is too funny. My dh hardly ever cooks at home. I do not like people in my kitchen and I love to cook. However, when we are camping I *never* cook. I cannot go near his grilling tools to save my life!

You are right about the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Another difference is that in Type 1 diabetes you will always need to control your insulin through injections. The disease is life-long. You can control the horrible effects of Type 1 diabetes by having really good control over your insulin regualtion. I cannot tell you how many people I have sene in the ER with horrible ulcers, sores, diminished eyesight, etc. from poor control of their diabetes. Losing a limb is not that uncommon in those with type 1 (or poorly controlled type 2 either).

Type 2 diabestes can be controlled through oral meds (though some people can have it bad enough toneed the injections) or just my diet and exercise alone. My father got type 2 diabestes when he was 50 y.o. He was very overweight. He lost 50 lbs. and no longer needed to take his oral meds for the diabetes. He was able to control it through his diet and exercising.

I guess my point is there are things you can do to cnotrol type 2 diabetes without meds than you can with type 1 diabetes.

"Is sex at 15 the reason you two are still special to each other?"

One of the reasons, yes. The primary reason, no.
