opinion to DIFFER. What I mean is--is there anyone on this board or in real life whose opinion/reasoning/debating/facts started to make your thinking more to the middle? As in if you thought sah or woh was best & then after some discussion/thought, you began to think that whatever is best for each family--really there is no one best way, etc.

We just really needed a new thread here!!!!!!!!

I don't see how they couldn't be. If they weren't included, the studies would say (incorrectly) that all SAHMs are middle to upper class. The studies just say that these poor SAHMs are outnumbered by the middle and upper class ones.

i tend to forget that some people only debate this issue regarding kids younger than 5.

I have no idea. She keeps claiming that studies show sah are iresponsible, regret their decisions, etc. That logic tells her that sah does not make sense. I have asked to see the studies and have yet to see any.

you are so right. one summer i enrolled my oldest in a daycare program because of the wonderful activites that had planned. many of which i would not have taken her on. she got to attend an opera, i would have never taken her there, but am glad she got the exposure. they got to go to a baseball game and then tour the facility afterwards and meet some of the players. they got to go to a play and go backstage. i cant even remember all the cool things they got to do that summer but it was awesome.

"I too am stumped by Sabinamarianne's adamance that ratios don't matter or are a simply personal preference only some parents are concerned with.

Every State limits the infant per caregiver ratio by law. You posted the ratios which *every* State has deemed sufficiently important that they've enacted laws concerning ratios. These are not mere recommendations or suggestions. Thus, limiting ratios is an across-the-board, objective concern to parents.

I believe Laura said in Sweden, daycare centers don't even accept infants ~ again, a universal concern of the State and obviously the parent-voter."

Great post!!!

Maybe you jumped into this subthread late. But that's what it was about.

honestly, no, not the state we currently live in. i do know however that our home would not pass the standards for the state we moved here from and yes, i did know what the standards were in that state.

i can give you a couple of very quick things that would prevent us from passing in that state - we have stairs without gates, we have animals living in our kitchen and roaming free throughout our house, we do not keep our doors locked and my kids are allowed to play in various parts of the house and outside without an adult being present.

"I think women have come a long way. I think the fact that we many choices we did not have in the past means we have come a long way. yes, there is more to be done but having every woman work is not the answer."

Indeed, "having every woman work is *not* the answer".

"I am the glass is half full type of person."

Me too :)

"I do not need to prove who I am by working."

Nor do I.

"I have a great reeason for sah...I want to be with my children when they are small. What benefit is daycare to an infant/toddler? None. I wanted to be at home with them and it is that simple."

Yep, Seems fairly simple to me :)
