Are most of your friends the same job status
Yes. We. Did.
I think it more a matter of convenience. It is really easy to have a playdate before afternoon kindergarten or after morning kindergarten. Weekends have different schedules. Some families like to have dedicated family time on the weekends. Frequently there are birthday parties already using up the possible playdate spots.
As they age, after school playdates are more trouble (cuts into homework time and weekday activities). As a result, there are more times when kids play on the weekends.

I have very few friends that SAH like me, and only one still has little ones like me. Basically if someone calls and wants one of my kids to come over and that child isn't needed at home or doesn't have an activity they need to go to then
Are you talking about half-day or full-day kindergarten? In any case, I think it would depend on the flexibility in the parents' jobs, how many hours they work, what hours they work, and what kind of othercare arrangements they have.
When Samantha is in kindergarten, there's a good chance DH and I will both be working full time. The plan is probably going to be something like he works 7-3 or so and I work 9-5. I think elementary school here usually lets out around 3:15, so he should be able to take Samantha to a playdate occasionally.
And if I wasn't comfortable with the kid's parent driving my kid around, I doubt I'd be comfortable with my kid going to that parent's house. I also remember a lot of kids when I was in elementary school would ride the bus home with another kid with a note allowing them to do that from the parent. That could also be an option.
The majority of my friends are also SAHMs.
