In our school, the sped kids took a field trip over to the middle school last year to check it out & meet the sped teachers, have a tour. In the spring there was also an info night for all 5th graders coming in to 6th grade, the 6th grade counselor visited & talked to them in the spring & gave them paperwork to choose their electives. In August before school starts there was a half day camp you could sign up for to go to and get a tour, practice opening lockers, and other things.

My dd is doing awesome & loves it, although she did not do a field trip ahead of time and she also happened to miss the camp. She was signed up for it, but was too ill to go. It also seemed like the whole first 2 weeks was orientation & going over the rules etc. I kept asking . . . when are you going to have some homework! LOL

If there's no shadowing, are there any other ways for you to get her over there before then? School events or shows, stuff like that?

It's standard in our district and private school as well, but I was just thinking of options for a situation where it's not standard or was substituted for something else.

I don't know, my dh has a pretty demanding job with major responsibilities and he has time not to hang out on the message boards (not his thing) but he does spend time on the Internet during the work day...but he doesn't (as I don't either) have to answer to someone about every minute of their work day.

Not to start the whole parent/child sitting in the back of the classroom debate but FYI, I don't know if this is an option or not but most schools around here (both public and private) allow a child to shadow for a 1/2 or full day at a new school.
