as a 20-year veteran teacher, I have to say that I disagree with much of what you've said. Admittedly, teaching is, in general, not a highly paid profession (certainly not nearly as much as teachers should be worth). However, people that want to be teachers do NOT go into it for the money. Teacher salaries are public knowledge. All one has to do is look up the pay scale for their district.

<< As a teacher, I find my intelligence and my motivations questioned. >>

I've never found this to be true.

<>

maybe that's because you came from industry into teaching. I've never found this to be true.

<,which is funny because the summers are when I can actually earn a decent salary so I will work them.>>

Many teachers do the same. Many of us opt not to work over the summer.

<>

In all my years, I've never had that happen. (I will allow that over my 20 years, maybe it has happened a time or two and I've forgotten it, LOL!). In most things, parents will defer to me and what I know and need to do in order to run my classroom. Frankly, I think they're generally in awe of anyone who wants to spend their day locked in with middle school students!

<>

we have oversight from our building administrators, but they don't micromanage in any way.

<>

I get alot of respect for what I do - as do my colleagues.

<>

I don't respect nor disrespect someone coming into teaching as a second career. I do worry that they don't have the appropriate classroom management skills to deal with 24 eleven, twelve and thirteen year olds at the same time.

<>

and the unionization is what has moved teaching along in terms of fairness in pay, health benefits, etc.

<, They stand on ther merit and their pay is merit pay (I'm not suggesting merit pay for teachers because success/failure of students may be due to previous teachers and not the one in question). >>

merit pay for teachers has been bandied about routinely over the years. However, no one has yet found a way to measure "good" teachers.

<< unionized professions are considered blue collar whether you belong to the union or not. So teaching is viewed as blue collar.>>

Not here in CT.

There's one problem with your argument. You've never been in industry so you can't compare how you're treated in the two proessions.

AWE is not the word I'd use.

Of course engineers earn more, they work year round- not nine months - and they have been generally male. Both are very respected jobs here. Both professions have a very high percentage of master's degrees. The pay around here is comparable to the professional federal government (again 9 months vs 12 months). Starting salaries for teachers are in the low $40ks.

In general, around here, I see the ptwoh and the sahps do the vast majority of volunteering. They have more time. take away that time and you would see a very different society.

I still can't believe you have so much of your identity tied up in your job.

No, the way you feel is an emotion.

Knowing approximately how much money it's going to cost to raise and educate your child is a fact.

Caring and raising are different concepts.
