I've never felt like I get a "part-time" salary, although being there for 20 years certainly makes a difference.

Most of the teachers that I know are not working summers (like me). Some are, though.

Have you thought about private tutoring? Lots of teachers around here make all their extra money that way. Going rate here is about $75 per hour. Some teachers do 2-3 tutoring hours on an almost daily basis.

A few years ago, I ran an afterschool Math club (school sanctioned/funded) for $55 per hour that met twice per week from October to April. It was the only way that I stayed afloat when I became a single parent.

Perhaps it was 30% in the auto industry, but I just googled "percentage of women engineers" and came up with multiple links that put the national number at 10%.

Engineering is a male-dominated profession. Teaching (below the college level, anyway) is a female-dominated profession. I don't understand why you're surprised that nobody's impressed when you say you're a teacher.

And real respect isn't about impressing people anyway.

I've been at this long enough that I can generally write my plans in the 30 min. that I get to school early each morning.

I grade papers during my free periods OR at home on the weekends.

don't you have a department secretary or head who does that type of ordering? usually, we order supplies ONCE per year in June -- for the following year.

<>

are there other, more veteran teachers who have done the labs that you're doing? Maybe they can help you with coordinating them?

<>

is this part of class time?

<>

our district has made a concerted effort to get all of its grade/subject level teachers "on the same page". There are 5 6th grade science teachers. We meet together for 30 min. once per week. We've worked to refine the tests and projects that we assign so that they are in line with each other.

<>

why is a first year teacher involved with assessing textbooks? Does this just HAPPEN to be the year they're making a big purchase like that? We purchased textbooks about 8 years ago and don't see changing the publisher/book any time soon.

<>

how many parents do you need to contact in a day? I spoke with one parent via e-mail and one in person at our team meeting today. I may e-mail with 2 or 3 parents on any given day.

most of this is just part and parcel of being a teacher.
